Slum Changers
The Alleestraße secondary school in Siegburg is building a bridge to Korogocho, Nairobi’s third largest slum. There has never been anything like it: An “online bridge” brought together pupils from Siegburg’s Alleestraße secondary school and children and young people from Nairobi’s third-largest slum, Korogocho.
On the 20th of July, Ayiera Initiative held Slum Footie Tournament. This social event provides a platform for slum residents to learn, deliberate, and discuss the most prevalent challenges facing them in their daily lives, to understand the challenges and develop relevant solutions to some of these prevalent problems.
Every year GSA holds a special event for marginalized children and young people. The two-day event popularly referred to as ‘Tag für Korogocho’ aims to create awareness of the imbalances in opportunities for children and young people across the world especially those in slums. This event also recognizes and supports Ayiera Initiative’s efforts in creating opportunities for young people through education, empowerment, and talent development.
The beginning of 2024 marks another key milestone for Ayiera Initiative! Our Centre is fully running on solar energy.
For a long time, we have had a big challenge with a reliable power supply. Considering our area of scope – Korogocho slum, continuously accessing electricity has been a major setback.
Every year, students from Gymnasium Siegburg Allestrasse hold a charity concert to support children from Korogocho slum. And this year, they called it ‘The Day for Korogocho’. On this day, students stand in solidarity with their counterparts from Korogocho by playing music and fundraising to support Ayiera Initiative’s empowerment programs in Korogocho slum.
In Kenya, general elections bring about their fair share of challenges every five years. At the lowest community levels and especially slums, election periods are filled with tension and fear of conflicts and violence.
