Meet the Kenyan ‘Slum Changers’

Imagine the biggest pile of trash you’ve ever seen. It probably doesn’t even come close to Dandora. People are sifting through it – thousands of them –ceaselessly searching for the next piece of refuse they might be able to sell for a few shillings. And then, in the literal shadow of all this hardship, there’s laughter. Children racing about. Footballs flying. Joyful chaos. Music, dance, art – all the things that make us human. And talent. So much unbelievable talent.

On the 20th of July, Ayiera Initiative held Slum Footie Tournament. This social event provides a platform for slum residents to learn, deliberate, and discuss the most prevalent challenges facing them in their daily lives, to understand the challenges and develop relevant solutions to some of these prevalent problems.

Every year GSA holds a special event for marginalized children and young people. The two-day event popularly referred to as ‘Tag für Korogocho’ aims to create awareness of the imbalances in opportunities for children and young people across the world especially those in slums. This event also recognizes and supports Ayiera Initiative’s efforts in creating opportunities for young people through education, empowerment, and talent development.

University Education support

Since its inception, the Ayiera initiative has made great strides in promoting and supporting education for poor and marginalized slum children. For many years, Ayiera Initiative has supported children and youths to get an education. Every year, students from Gymnasium Siegburg Allestrasse hold a charity concert to support children from Korogocho slum. And this year, they called it ‘The Day for Korogocho’. On this day, students stand in solidarity with their counterparts from Korogocho by playing music and fundraising to support Ayiera Initiative’s empowerment programs in Korogocho slum.
